Deeply Understanding Place Value

Why does place value understanding appear to be so strong, only to weaken over time? Is place value really so critical for students to learn? If so, how can we make sure students conceptually understand it from the beginning?

Through an investigative study of place value, teachers will be armed with an arsenal of tools for teaching deep understanding. You will explore engaging investigations; rich explorations; rigorous, open-ended questions; and collaborative games. The end result is a more complex understanding of our base-ten number system and myriad strategies for helping students see its power.
 

 


Building Computational Power

This entirely interactive session focuses on making sense of how whole number operations are affected by the base-ten place value system. Engage in simulations that lay the groundwork for connecting whole number operations and place value as specified in the Common Core State Standards and the Progressions documents. Explore mental math methods that build fluency and further deepen understanding. Leave with concrete strategies for increased efficiency and understanding that will pay off for students throughout their math educations.

 


Fractions and Decimals: Concepts and Operations

Too many students are locked out of higher math because of a defiency in fraction concepts. In this entirely interactive workshop, examine and analyze the progression of fractions as specified in the Common Core State Standards. Engage and explore an assortment of hands-on, minds-on activities and lessons for teaching fractions concepts in elementary and middle grades. Topics include the relationship between the size and number of units in one whole, fraction equivalence, comparing and ordering fractions, fraction operations, and problem solving. A section will also be devoted to fraction applications such as time, money, and measurement. All explorations incorporate higher level thinking questions, engagement structures, and technology connections.

In this interactive workshop, you will analyze the Key Shifts for the Common Core State Standards. An assortment of research-driven resources will provide infinite opportunities to enrich your existing content. Through a variety of explorations, investigations, and activities focusing on content standards specificaly suited for your coursework, you will experience how focus, coherence, and rigor become daily practice.
